Fall Creek Lake – Willamette National Forest

Fall Creek Lake

A man-made Fall Creek Lake is part of what you see along the Fall Creek Recreation Area which is famed for its ample waters bordered by the lush greenery of the Willamette National Forest. A rockfill structure, Fall Creek Dam was built in 1966 to serve for the purposes of water retention, flood damage prevention, irrigation, and a variety of recreation opportunities. With a storage size of 115,100 acre-feet, Fall Creek Lake controls runoff from 184 square miles of drainage area.

There are sturdy bridges over the creeks including the one about Jasper and this makes for stunning views in the distance. It is a safe swimming hole with cool waters that attract avid swimmers, divers, and kayakers especially in the heat of summer. There are a number of campsites for those who wish for more than a few hours of unbridled fun. As well the recreation area offers camping, picnicking and fishing.

The 14-mile-long Fall Creek National Recreation Trail along the stunning national forest, stunning emerald pools, and rapids of the Fall Creek is accessible year-round. There is plenty to see on the trail including old growth Douglas firs, ferns, a small Slim Creek cave, rock outcrops, and a section of forest that was burnt in the 2003 fire. It is a drastic change of scenery from the lush greenery to the burnt remnants but thankfully, the forest is recovering from the devastation.

To find Fall Creek, exit onto Highway 58 from Eugene and head east before turning across Dexter Reservoir. From there you will find clear signs for the Fall Creek tributary about Jasper.
